Welcome from the Captain Richard Horsfall
Welcome from the Captain
As a long standing member of Crosland Heath, but one who was exiled to The
South for much of my working life, there was no question, on retirement,
where my wife, Barbara and I would play our golf following our return to
Yorkshire full time.
Having a Grandfather who was a founder member and two brothers who were
Captain of the club, I was of course honoured to be asked to fulfil this
role in 2013.
"The Heath" as it's known locally is acknowledged as one of the friendliest
places to be a member and extends this fellowship to visitors whether
Society or Individual players. Differing levels of skill are catered for
with regular competitions and many "roll-ups" taking place each week.
Roll-ups are not handicap based, which results in a camaraderie second to
none and one which embraces new members into the club seamlessly.
An Alister MacKenzie design, the course is relatively unchanged from it's
original design of 100 years ago with springy turf on the fairways and
stunning "tower" par 3's based around old quarries. The Heath is always in
great condition, and being a fast draining course provides a terrific test
of golf all year round without any great physical effort due to it's gentle
heathland layout.
Following a year of unprecedented weather, averaging double the normal
rainfall, our staff & management both course and clubhouse based have
maintained the standards required to affirm our place as a leading club.
This in turn has resulted in a retention of membership levels the envy of
most other clubs, and we look forward to a dryer, busier year in 2013.
Social events take place throughout the year bringing together not only
various sections of the club, but family members also.
To our members, I wish you all an enjoyable year and look forward to Barbara
and I seeing you "on the course" and at the many social events.
To visitors and potential new members, you are guaranteed a warm Yorkshire
welcome and please make yourself known to me when visiting, I'll be the one
by the bar!!

A little bit of history
When the members of the present Cowlersley Golf Club get their new course at Crosland Heath there is one thing of which they will not be able to complain. They cannot say there is any lack of variety. I have not seen many courses in the rough, and without the eye of imagination it is not easy to picture what the result the work of the course contractors may be, but it requires very little of the imaginative faculty to see that away on top of the hills there above the Sands House Inn the players who follow the little white ball will have a course full of interest from the first hole to the last.Reproduced with kind permission from the Huddersfield Daily Examiner, 7th August 1913 Crosland Heath Golf Club was formed in 1914. The new land consisted of disused quarries and redundant farm land and needed the unique imagination of Doctor Alister MacKenzie to realise the possibilities of this wide stretch of land. MacKenzie famously went on to design courses across the world, including Royal Melbourne, Cypress Point and, most prestigiously, the home of the Masters, Augusta National. Being one of the highest courses in the country, Crosland Heath Golf Club enjoys extensive panoramic views across the town of Huddersfield stretching out well in to the old East Riding. To the North, South and West the views are equally spectacular, adding to the treat that is playing this testing heathland course. The quality of the greens is renowned, along with the challenge that is the finest set of par three holes on one course. Despite its lofty Pennine position it is a relatively flat, non-arduous walking course. This interesting layout changes with the climatic conditions making club selection and course management major considerations. The overall presentation of the course will delight any visitor along with the warm welcome they will receive from members and staff. The large numbers of visitors returning each year bears testament to the enjoyment that is experienced at this magnificent course. Welcome to Crosland Heath Golf Club - we hope you enjoy your time with us.
